The facility, which offers a simulation environment for evaluating and testing inflight applications, will allow MAS to better support its Asian customers, leverage the region's skilled IT labor and provide easier access for companies who wish to offer their products on MAS platforms, according to Takashi Mizuma, President of MAS.

Starling Completes Ku-Band Development Phase
Starling Advanced Communications has completed a critical phase in development of a Ku-band solid-state antenna system, which the company says proves the capability of receiving broadband communication channels and providing global coverage at a competitive price.

Starling's solution is based on experience gained from defense systems programs and patents developed especially for commercial applications where equipment cost, low antenna profile, and efficient transponder use are primary considerations.

Cathay Pacific Tests Oh2 Service
Cathay Pacific Airways on 1 October is launching a three-month test of Oh2's full management intelligence system. Oh2's researchers worked with Cathay to develop an electronic survey, which will go to all passengers traveling on the airline's AVOD-equipped aircraft to and from Hong Kong.

The questionnaire is on a voluntary basis, and all data collected remains anonymous.

Oh2's ground-based infrastructure will collect the survey responses and data from the IFE usage statistics and conduct in-depth analysis. Results are presented to the airline's management over a secured website.

EMS To Fly Inmarsat Swift64
EMS Technologies Inc., which designs and manufactures wireless solutions, received Inmarsat approval to fly Swift64 Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS), an "always-on" connection that allows users to pay for content used and not for the connect time.

The service will be on the HSD-128 Aeronautical High-Speed Data terminal, which eliminates the need for an external ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) terminal adapter, and provides a direct connection to the Swift64 ISDN.

Rockwell Chooses EMS Components
EMS Technologies Inc. has entered into an exclusive agreement with Rockwell Collins to deliver 33 HST-900 high-speed transceivers, with delivery to begin early fourth quarter 2002. The integral component adds a single channel of Inmarsat Swift64 service to the Rockwell Collins SAT-906 system.

MASLink™ Provides Pax Usage Data
Matsushita Avionics Systems (MAS) debuted MASLink™, an Internet-based tool that provides airlines with on-demand access to, and analysis of, passenger IFE usage information, IFE system performance data, and maintenance information. MAS is providing this service to airlines through an agreement with Innovative Media Solutions (IMS) of Anaheim, California.

"Customers can upload their IFE system's data from anywhere in the world," according to Alan Pellegrini, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Operations for MAS.

MAS said airlines could use the data to fine-tune content selection by class of service, routes, and destinations, and provide an exact, verifiable count of advertising impressions to potential advertisers.

Data Downloaded Wirelessly With TCB
Passenger usage data gathered by MASLink™ can be downloaded off the aircraft and new information can be uploaded wirelessly using MAS' Terminal Cellular Bridge (TCB). "This removed the need to tie IFE data transmission into other aircraft systems," stated Paul Margis, Senior Vice President, Engineering and Quality for MAS.

Operating at 900, 1800, and 1900 mhs, the tri-band GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) telephone is able to interface with existing cellular systems around the world to create an end-to-end digital supply chain for data. With the integrated General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) capability, TCB can achieve actual data transfer rates up to 288 kbps, depending on local service.

The unit weighs less than four pounds, and its power supply consumes a maximum of 25 watts with an average consumption of 17 watts, according to Margis.

TCB and MASLink™ are expected to be available to airlines beginning 1st quarter 2003.
