TECH TOPICS TRANSLATED

Billy Davis (Intersound Inc.)—in the guise of Donny Osmond, Bob Barker, and Regis Philbin—hosted a variety of game-shows to help define some of the technology issues facing the IFE industry.

It was Neil James (Rockwell Collins) and Chris Schindler (MGM Studios) versus Kevin Munday (MAS-Matsushita Avionics Systems) and Justin Tavares (Discovery Communications, Inc.) in Acronym Pyramid . The contestants competed to define most quickly such acronyms as BITE (Built In Test Equipment).

Playing an infomercial "pitch-person," Amy Parbury (Intersound Inc.) asked "Are you tired of those video tapes? All that winding and re-winding getting you down?" as she extolled the virtues of MPEG.

Cindy Tarver (Rockwell Collins) played the giddy contestant on The Price is Right! Her task was to arrange a variety of media devices in order of price.

Bryan Rusenko (Crest National Digital Media Complex) used his infomercial slot to expound on the benefits of DVD.

Linda Palmer (Buena Vista Non-Theatrical, Inc.) answered key questions surrounding aspect ratio. How much more image can be viewed on a 16x9 format compared to a 4x3 format? Answer: 33%. What aspect ratio is closest to the original film's format? Answer: 16x9.
