Getting There

Air Transportation
Lufthansa German Airlines is the preferred provider of air transportation for the WAEA 26th Annual Conference & Exhibition in Hamburg, Germany.

WAEA U.S. conference attendees who book reservations through Lufthansa will receive discounts between 10% and 15% off published fares in Business and Economy Class. Some restrictions apply and online booking is not available for these discounted fares.

Please be sure to mention your ID number: “WAEA 1201” to receive the discounted fare (a copy of the conference registration may be required).

Some points to remember when calling for reservations:

  • Ticket booking period is valid 15 April through 19 September 2005
  • Travel Dates: Travel to Hamburg between 1 May 2005 and 19 September 2005. Last return date is 15 October 2005.
  • Name: As it appears in your passport
  • Advance Purchase: some fares require up to 14 days advance purchase
  • Ticketing Deadline: Seats booked in Economy class require ticketing within 72 hours of booking.
  • Tickets: Lufthansa will issue electronic tickets. A fee of $20.00 will be charged for paper tickets.
  • Taxes: subject to change.
  • Rules: Tickets purchased are subject to fare rules, i.e. possible fees for cancellation, date changes, routing changes, minimum stay, etc.
  • Special Services: Special meals, seat assignments, excess baggage, frequent flyer number, wheelchair requests can be handled at the time of reservation.

Lufthansa is a member of the Star Alliance and all mileage flown can be credited to your frequent flyer account with United Airlines, US Airways or any other Star Alliance partner.

The Hamburg Airport (HAM) is 5.23 miles (8.5 km) north-west of the centre of Hamburg in the city of Fuhlsbüttel, with easy connections by airport buses, scheduled buses, rail and taxis. Approximately 70 airlines, including international carriers, fly direct to 18 national and 98 international destinations world-wide, with direct links to 52 European cities. The Hamburg Airport is the fifth-largest of Germany's sixteen commercial airports. Travel time between the Hamburg Messe & Congress Center Hamburg and the airport by car is approx. 20-30 minutes, and by public transport about 35 minutes, depending on the connection.

The Hamburg Messe & Congress Center Hamburg is centrally located in downtown Hamburg and can be reached quickly and reliably using any means of transportation.

By Taxi – There are taxi ranks in front of all the terminals. The journey to the city centre takes about 30 minutes and costs approx. EUR 20.

By Car – Hamburg Messe & Congress Center Hamburg is signposted on the Federal and State highways and Hamburg's motorway exits and indicates the shortest route to the venue, which has 900 parking spaces in its own underground car park. Train & Bus - Local transportation connects the Hamburg Messe & Congress Center Hamburg with the entire city. You can reach the venue via the station “Hamburg-Dammtor.”

Hamburg Airport does not yet have a direct rail connection to the city centre. The nearest subway & suburban railway station, Ohlsdorf, is served by suburban rail lines S1 and S11 and the subway line U1. Ohlsdorf station and Terminals 1 and 4 are connected by the number 110 bus, the "Airport-Express", which runs every 10 minutes.

Airport Express:

from Airport to Main Train Station

WAEA has arranged a discount for conference participants to utilize the Airport Express service. This shuttle transports between the Airport and Main Train Station (Hauptbahnhof) - non stop. From Hauptbahnhof take the public city train (S1 or S21) for 1 stop at  Dammtor-Bahnhof and walk to the CCH and HM.

German Railways - Traveling with Deutsche Bahn is safe, comfortable, convenient and reasonable. The Hamburg Messe & Congress Center Hamburg is directly linked with the ICE, IC and Interregio network of Deutsche Bahn, with its own Intercity main line train station, Dammtor, just a few steps away. It is only a five-minute walk from Dammtor to Hamburg Messe (East entrance).
