Session Descriptions

New Member Orientation/IFE Basics -
If you're new to the WAEA or new to IFE , this session is for you. First you'll get an overview of your WAEA Members-only benefits, services, and resources … and how to make the most of them. Next, a panel representing the various sectors of the IFE industry (content, hardware/ systems, labs, service suppliers, etc.) will guide you through the basic processes, roles/ relationships, procedures/operating practices, decision cycles, and emerging issues involved in delivering inflight entertainment and communications.
Speakers:
Linda Palmer, Buena Vista Non-Theatrical; Sue Pinfold, Spafax; Christine Ringger, Swiss International Air Lines; Bryan Rusenko, Crest Digital. Moderated by Marc Musicus, Airborne Entertainment Ltd.

Cabin Connectivity: Gateway to a New Pax Experience
A joint-panel representing leaders from various sectors of IFE will discuss the longer-term view of how real-time cabin communications, connectivity, and associated technologies may revolutionize the passenger-IFE experience over the next decade … and dramatically change how we, as an industry, supply it. We'll draw on recent lessons from other industries (retail/shopping, music, broadcast TV/radio, etc.) to predict how pervasive connectivity will change passenger habits and expectations for IFE … and radically change our traditional business and operational models. We'll examine the potential for seamless (and affordable) pax communications, real-time content distribution, and easy inflight access to virtually unlimited sources and varieties of audio, video, and interactive entertainment. Or will future consumer technologies and “open” distribution channels fundamentally change the role of IFE and the nature of our product? We'll look carefully at all the potential scenarios, their challenges and opportunities, and how our industry can work in concert to prepare for this exciting future.
Speaker: Vaughn Tan, Google; Tom Weigman, AirCell

IFE Direct Revenue: Making It Work
Learn the most effective strategies and operational “best practices” for creating and managing direct revenue programs sourced through the IFE system … including pay-per-view/pay-per-feature, rental fees for portables, voice/data connectivity use charges, inflight shopping/direct sales, etc. A moderated airline panel will discuss the best methods for marketing (assessing and communicating the value of inflight services/products), collection (cash, credit card readers, wireless), transaction management (authorization, security, tracking), accounting (back-office software, transfers, data storage, reporting), and more. We'll discuss the impact of flight length and route/region, the training of key personnel, the integration with other inflight revenue-generation programs (food, beverage, duty-free, etc.), and the utilization of existing back-office procedures. You'll learn about all the mechanisms, roles and responsibilities, technologies, and procedures critical to a successful IFE-revenue generation program.
Panelists: Azman Ahmad, Malaysia Airlines; Somphol Chaiyakiat, Thai Airways International; Louise McKenven, Air Canada , Christine Ringger, Swiss International Air Lines

A380 Launch: An IFE Revolution
In this joint presentation from an A380 “launch” airline, Airbus, and its IFE hardware/systems suppliers, you'll get the start-to-finish story on designing and delivering IFE for the next generation of passenger aircraft – and its impact on every sector of the IFE industry. You'll learn all the A380 cabin debut details, including IFE system features/specs, content offering/packaging/branding, navigation menus/GUIs, interactive and real-time content selections, connectivity, data and voice communications, future capabilities, and more.
